The Greatest Generation

The Greatest Generation is a term, penned by Tom Brokaw, that describes the generation that was born in the early 1900s.  They were the greatest generation because they were faced with the seemingly impossible challenge of fighting a global war in Europe and the Pacific.  The enemy was clear.  The goal was clear.  The sacrifices were clear.  They stepped up to the plate in a way that few, if any, generations have ever done.

A great example of this generation are my grandparents.  My grandfather on my dad's side served in WW2 and my grandfather on my mom's side served in the national guard several years later.  My grandfather on my dad's side was a cook in the air force.  He met my grandmother before going off to war and married her when he returned.  Both of these men are the kindest, gentlest, wisest men you may ever meet.  They are real men.  They tell it how it is and they don't believe in being politically correct.  They can identify a goal and stick to it until it's done.  They love their families and will do anything for them.

You won't see my grandparents lobbying for unions, socialized healthcare, bailouts, amnesty for illegals, gay marriage, etc.  Why?  Because they earned what they have.  They weren't given anything.  That's a major problem in our modern culture.  Most people believe that they should have all of the benefits that their parents and grandparents earned.  Let me explain...
  • Unions - Unions were originally created to protect employees against abusive employers.  They were needed...100 years ago.  Today, they are behemoths that are big enough to buy massive companies.  Their purpose isn't to protect, but to control and get.  They use their leverage to force corporations to overpay their employees and give them ridiculous benefits that they didn't even remotely earn.
  • Socialized Healthcare - While obvious to most, this is just another example of the 'give me' attitude in this country.  Why should my neighbor be forced to pay for my medical bills?  It's not their responsibility.  Never has been and never will be.  Personal responsibility folks...get some.
  • Bailouts - Yay! Free money for all!  Oh wait, no it's not.  That money comes from somewhere.  If it's borrowed, we raise our debt.  If it's printed, we raise inflation.  If it's taxed, it's more out of our pockets.  The key to not needing bailouts is to avoid the circumstances that require them.
  • Amnesty for Illegals - The American Dream is still very real.  Many people from all over the world would do anything to live and work here.  And we want them to.  However, they need to follow the law, just like everyone else.  There is a process in place to ensure that people are coming here for the right reasons.  That process also protects us for outside threats.  What makes you think that people who break the law to get into this country won't break the law while living in this country?
  • Gay Marriage - Marriage is between a man and a woman.  Always has been and always should be.  That doesn't mean that being gay is wrong or evil.  What you do in the privacy of your bedroom is your business.  However, traditions have their place and this is one of them.  If this country wants to give the same tax and medical benefits to gay couples then I am all for it, but use civil unions or something similar.  Like it or not, the nuclear family is the best, safest, and most natural family form there is.
I say all of that to say this...we need another 'Greatest Generation' that can identify the difference between right and wrong and do something about it.  Unfortunately, it will probably take another global crisis (not global warming you idiot!) to force our hand.

Until next time,
Fubak
